According to the 2015 COMPASS Global Startup Ecosystem Ranking, Paris is at the 11th position. After spending one week in the Paris startup ecosystem in September, while attending startup events, visiting incubators and meeting entrepreneurs, we can confirm the dynamism of it!
First we visited SKEMA Business School in La Defense which has an Entrepreneurship Club hosted by SKEMA Alumni, the Alumni association of SKEMA. The Club organizes events in Paris quaterly with testimonials from entrepreneurs. Watch out for the next event!
Then we attended the Buzz at La Ruche, an informal lunch every Friday where startups can share their good news, ask for feedback about ideas and external people can present their project (on request only). La Ruche is a coworking space and an incubator focusing on social entrepreneurship. The office is located right in front of the canal Saint Martin and the nature oriented design of the coworking space give it a very green and relaxed atmosphere to work.
To fully exploit our 7 days in Paris 😉 we attended the Pitch Deck of the Startup Weekend Paris, Food Edition, at La Mutinerie, a “freedom oriented” coworking space. The energy at the SW was great and pitches covered all topics of the food industry. From the creation to cooking spaces, to delivery and even ideas with insects! The winning team was Le Potager Patissier that came up with vegetable pastries, much healthier than normal pastries and so delicious!
Pepiniere 27 was next in our list of coworking spaces to visit, and with 3,800 m2 in the 11th district hosting 75 startups this place is a must on your next visit! Once again a very clean design with a lot of vegetation make it a really nice place to work and collaborate.
Most entrepreneurs in Paris know the Numa with all its activities: coworking, start-up acceleration, community outreach and open innovation programs. But what is really great at the Numa is the free coworking space on the ground floor with wifi and even a bar. If you’re looking for a place to work for a few hours you know where to go!
Finally we ended our trip to Paris by attending the France Digital Day, one of the top tech events in France gathering more than 1,500 participants at the Carreau du Temple. For more than 6 hours successful entrepreneurs, investors and leaders shared their vision and experience like Frederic Mazzella, Founder & CEO of BLABLACAR, Laurent Allard, CEO of OVH or Michael Pryor, CEO of TRELLO. Not to talk about the nice cocktail & networking at the end of the day and the opportunity to pitch ideas to real VCs!
Of course there are many other coworking spaces and incubators in Paris like The Family or Startup42, and at least one more week would have been necessary to visit all these places, but once again Paris is definitely in the top 3 in Europe for startups!
